Heating & Cooling a Business

Jun 27, 2018 | Commercial

No matter the size of your commercial property, an HVAC system is a vital asset to the business. They are the basis of comfort for customers, clients, and employees alike. Heating and cooling a business may seem daunting; but for the technicians at B & C Mechanical, it’s a piece of cake! We made this guide to help you understand the basics of commercial HVAC systems.

What do Commercial HVAC Systems do?

With a commercial HVAC system, you can control…

  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Airflow
  • Air Quality

…at the push of a button.

What Parts are they Made up of?

The size and needs of your business will determine the type of HVAC you purchase. Components of various sizes are mixed and matched to fit the building they’re installed in. These are the four basic components of any commercial HVAC system:

1. Heating
The heating component is typically a boiler, furnace, or heat pump. The heating device that’s installed depends on the climate you’re in. Boilers and furnaces tend to be used in areas with colder winters, while heat pumps are best for moderate climates.

2. Cooling
Air conditioners, liquid chillers and heat pumps are common types of cooling components. Heat pumps can simultaneously function as the heating and cooling components, except in regions with extremely cold winters. Otherwise, these three options can be used in conjunction with a furnace or boiler.

3. Ventilation
Ventilation is the process of the air being filtered and dispersed throughout the building. The air handling unit (AHU) blows air through the ducts.

Terminals are a smaller type of AHU.

Makeup air units (MAU) are a type of air handler that uses 100 percent outside air, instead of recirculating the air indoors.

4. Thermostat
The thermostat is the mastermind of the operation, telling each component what do do.
