AIR CONDITIONERS
AC Basics
The four main components to your air conditioner are:
1. Condenser
This is the outside metal unit. This is where the gas from the compressor is condensed into a liquid. The gas that enters the condenser is very hot. The temperature is then lowered so that the gas can convert back to a liquid.
2. Compressor
This is inside the condenser. It circulates the pressurized refrigerant, to concentrates the heat and changes the low pressure gas to high pressure.
3. Evaporator
This is the part of the system that is inside the home. In simple language: it absorbs the heat from your home.
4. Expansion Valve
This controls the amount of refrigerant in your system.
All of these pieces are connected by a copper tube that handles refrigerant, creating the closed-loop. Heat is collected in the evaporator, sent outside to the condenser the heat is removed and the cool air is recirculated back into your home.
AC FAQ
An Air Conditioner Doesn’t Create Cool Air
What happens in the process is actually the removal of heat from the air. Your AC uses a chemical called refrigerant to remove heat and transfer it outside. The warm air runs through the lines and coils in your unit and goes form liquid to gas and back again and in the is process the refrigerant removes the heat and transfers it elsewhere so that when the air comes out the other side it is cool.
Your AC Will Remove Humidity
Lower humidity helps the over all comfort level by making you feel cooler even if the temperature is the same.
Your Air Filter Needs to be Checked and Replaced Every 3-6 Months (depending on manufacturers recommendations)
A dirty air filter restricts your air flow which reduces efficiency, costing you money and over time can put stress on your unit and could cause a costly repair.
Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance
Your HVAC systems needs regular check ups to keep it running in tip top shape. Having regular annual preventative maintenance will bring you longer life and fewer breakdowns over all.
SEER
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) measures air conditioning and heat pump cooling efficiency, which is calculated by the cooling output for a typical cooling season divided by the total electric energy input during the same time frame. A higher SEER rating means greater energy efficiency. [Trane]
At B & C Mechanical, Inc. we provide all the services you need to keep your AC running in tip-top shape. Call us for repairs, maintenance or new system installation.
DUCTLESS
What is Ductless?
Often called split systems or mini-split systems, ductless heating and cooling is one of the easiest places to save money on your home energy bill. Depending on the size and layout of your space, ductless systems can be more expensive to install, however they may reduce your monthly bill by up to 30%. In a traditional central air system you loose energy through leaks and holes in your duct system. A ductless system removes that variable.
Ductless is quiet, efficient and since it also functions as a heater, it can provide you and your home with more comfort options than a standard air conditioner and furnace combination.
HEAT PUMPS
Unlike a furnace, a heat pump is an appliance that moves heat from one place to another rather then generating heat. Many of our Florida residents choose to use a heat pump in their homes. The advantage to using a heat pump is that although 90% of the year we cool our homes, there is sometimes that unseasonably cold night where you may wish to het your home. With a heat pump you can easily switch it to heat and warm your home without the use of a furnace.
There are 3 basic forms of heat pump available.
-
1. Air Source
An air source heat pump uses a series of coils to collect the heat from the air and transfer it inside or outside.
2. Water Source
A water source heat pump collects energy from water by running a series of pipes underwater and then transfers the heat in or out.
3. Geothermal
A geothermal heat pump, also known as a ground source heat pump collects energy from the earth through a series of coils and transfers that energy inside or outside.
